The 4 Best Social Media Campaigns of 2014

We’ve got 4 of the best social media campaigns of 2014 for you to review. Hopefully you can take some information from these social media campaigns and apply it to your current business marketing. It’s okay to co-opt another idea when it comes to social media. Just make sure you apply it to your business and/or product.

1) Toys”R”Us used a brilliant hashtag to create a viral social media campaign with #PlayItForward. They partnered with Shaquille O’Neal and the Toys for Tots Foundation to raise money and distribute toys to kids in need. They encouraged customers to take a selfie when they donated and use the hashtag. When they did that, Toys”R”Us donated an additional toy to Toys for Tots. The campaign raised nearly $6,000,000. That’s what we call successful.

2) Esurance presented a commercial during the 2014 Super Bowl that promised it would give away $1.5 million to one person who tweeted #EsuranceSave30. Twitter was flooded with the hashtag. Obviously cold, hard cash is a more powerful motivator than just about any other marketing campaign. There were 5.4 million uses of the hashtag with 2.6 billion social impressions on Twitter. There were 332,000 views of this commercial on YouTube and a rise of about 3,000% on the official Esurance Twitter account. Now, those are some big numbers.

3) The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge – now who hasn’t heard of that? This movement swept the entire world this summer had people dumping buckets of ice over their heads to raise money for Lou Gehrig’s disease, aka ALS. Everyone seemed to participate in the challenge including high profile celebrities such as Justin Timberlake and Benedict Cumberbatch. Even entire cities like Boston took part in this. In only a few weeks, ALS and its 38 chapters received more than $100 million. 100,000 new donors were added to the organization’s cause and a lot of publicity about the disease occurred.

4) #LikeAGirl rocked YouTube in 2014. Always, a maker of feminine products, turned around the phrase #LikeAGirl and made it something positive. Usually when women are told that they do something #LikeAGirl, it’s not meant that way. Always made the phrase positive. People really got behind it. The video racked up 53 million views during a World Cup year. Not bad for a touching story.

Basically, each of these campaigns teaches us that touching a chord with people, emotionally, makes good viral social media campaigns. If people like your message, they’ll respond to it. If you give them easy, actionable items to follow, they’ll do it. Your social media campaigns needn’t be complex. They just need to touch the heartstrings.
